ABOUT MELLY AND FAMILY...

Melly and her family are real!! Author, Mike White and his fiancée, Carol, adopted a scruffy puppy in 2018 and named her Melody. Melody was nicknamed Melly and quickly became the inspiration for the Mellybean series.

In the author's notes of Mellybean and the Wicked Wizard, Mike writes "When writing these books, I try to capture each of their real-life, individual personalities." Butternut's love for climbing, Tugs' obsession with food, Chuck's thoughtfulness, and Melly's courage are just a few of the real traits they share with the characters in the books.
